Jenny – where it all began
My Story
I’m James Callard, the founder of Callard Boatworks. My passion for boats began with a canoe I built from scratch during lockdown. That project opened the door to a world of traditional boatbuilding and set me on a path that continues to this day.
Since then, I’ve developed my skills through formal training and hands-on experience at respected boatyards, and I’m now based in Stratford-upon-Avon working on a commercial hire fleet and learning to skipper. Through Callard Boatworks, I offer carefully selected private boat repair, maintenance and bespoke woodworking services outside my working hours.

International Boatbuilding Training College
LOWESTOFT
My journey began at the IBTC where I learned the foundations of traditional boatbuilding. This gave me the skills, confidence and appreciation for proper craftsmanship that still guides my work today.
Thorpe St Andrews
NORWICH
My first professional boatyard experience, working on wooden and GRP boats and learning from experienced boatbuilders. This gave me a solid foundation in traditional skills and practical boat care.
Woodbridge Boatyard
SUFFOLK
Progressed into a busy commercial yard, working across multiple boats, restorations and repairs, including larger vessels and lifting operations. Proud to have been part of the team featured in Classic Boat and in a yard recognised at the Yards & Harbours / Classic Boat Awards 2026.
Stratford-upon-Avon
PRESENT
Now working on boat maintenance within a commercial hire operation and learning to skipper. Continuing to develop my skills on the water while gaining valuable experience with a diverse fleet of boats.
